Fire opal doesn’t need play-of-color to sell itself — the orange-to-red body color alone does the work, somewhere between a sunset and a traffic light depending on the parcel, not unlike our Aurora Opal. Mexico remains the main source, and clarity swings a lot between batches; some rough is nearly transparent, some cloudy. We grade for saturation and clarity together, since a cloudy stone photographs poorly even if the hue is strong. Faceted and cabochon cuts both go into Mexican fire opal rings, and because the material can be brittle, we recommend protective bezel settings — see also Australian Opal or the full gemstone catalog.
