Cantera opal arrives still embedded in its natural host rock — usually a reddish or grey rhyolite matrix — so what you’re really selling in a cantera opal pendant or ring is the contrast between raw stone and flashes of opal fire breaking through it, rather than a polished gem in the usual sense. Each piece is naturally irregular, and we don’t try to force uniform sizing on a stone that isn’t built for it. Fire intensity and matrix color vary considerably parcel to parcel, so we grade and photograph individually above a certain order size.
